The Malaya Buddhist Association was established at Kek Lok Si Temple, Penang. |
1961 |
At the second members’ assembly held in Malacca, it was unanimously decided to establish a Buddhist institute. |
1964 |
The main building of the Buddhist Association, located at Jalan Masjid Negeri, Penang, was completed. |
24-04-1969 |
The "Malaysia Buddhist Institute Preparation Committee" was officially established to actively advance the preparation work. |
18-09-1969 |
The board of directors was officially established. Ven. Cheng Yan was appointed as Chairman, Ven. Pen Dao and Ven. Ru Xian as Vice Chairmen. Ven. Xiang Kong was appointed as General Affairs, Ven. Qing Liang as Finance Officer. Ven. Zhu Mo was appointed as the principal, and Ven. Bai Sheng as vice principal. After the principal and vice principal assumed their positions, Mr. Wong Yam Moon was appointed as the Dean of Studies, Mr. Tan Siew Eng as the Dormitory Supervisor, and other staff were appointed. |

The Buddhist Institute officially commenced classes. Initially, only a few small rooms on the left side of the third floor of the main building were used as classrooms. Subsequently, the meeting hall at the back of the third floor and the last classroom on the right were also utilized. |
April 1971 |
The institute received government approval for its registration as "Malaysia Buddhist Institute". |
22-11-1973 |
The Malaya Buddhist Association officially received approval from the Registrar of Societies to change its name to the "Malaysia Buddhist Association". |
01-01-1979 |
A correspondence course division was established to provide opportunities for those interested in studying Buddhism but unable to attend the institute. |
19-09-1994 |
To ensure the economic stability of the Malaysia Buddhist Institute, a support team was formed to raise necessary funds for the institute. |
01-12-1994 |
The existing school building was no longer sufficient, so classrooms located on the second floor of the Penang Buddhist Free School were borrowed for use. |
