INTRODUCTION OF MALAYSIAN BUDDHIST INSTITUTE (MBI)

Malaysian Buddhist Institute (MBI) was established in 3rd March 1970, which is a day-time Buddhist academic institute but it is different from other ordinary schools.  It is an institution that cultivates religious professionals. Our students are both monastic members and lay followers. The institution’s main academic contents are based on Buddhism doctrines: To adapt to the needs of times, it includes Mandarin, Bahasa Malaysia and English Language lessons and other modern intellectual subjects, such as, Computer studies, Mathematics, Book-keeping, History, Philosophy knowledge and Music, etc.  Besides the academic learning subjects, the institution’s specific motto of ‘Compassion, Wisdom, Diligent and Giving’ is a daily practise, in accordance with the purification of body, speech, and mind, along with the practice text of six types of harmony.  With the twelve objectives:  faith, hardworking, manner, honesty, communication, services, cheerfulness, civic-mindedness, modesty, tidiness, emotional feeling and discipline as the assessment for conduct.

The Objectives of Founding MBI:

1). to promote Buddha Dharma education;

2). to cultivate and train Dharma preachers and presiding sanghas;

3). to continue the flourishment of wisdom life in generations to come;

4). to uplift Buddha Dharma education to a great height of development;

5). to bring progress and harmony to the community;

6). to enable young Buddhists to gain a thorough understanding through the other worldly dharma (law).

7). to gain a good understanding of worldly dharma (law) reasonably to benefit oneself and others by keeping up to uphold the right dharma teachings and to glorify Buddhism uninterruptedly.

During the Federal government organised an educational review committee, Malaysian Buddhist Association submitted a memorandum, proposing that all states primary and secondary schools should set up an elective of Buddhism and proposed that should the government wish to train Buddhist teaching personnel, MBI would be pleased to provide assistance. As a result, MBI has already shouldered today, and may have to shoulder even more heavy burdens in the future. But this is also to enable the existence and flourishment of Buddhism in Malaysia. Therefore, all Malaysian Buddhist monks, nuns and lay Buddhists should have a common understanding and work together on this.
