Brief Introduction to Elder Zhen Guo

Place of Origin: Originally from Taoyuan County, Taiwan

Education and Career Highlights: 

  • At the age of 17, he took tonsure under Master Huimin at Xiangyun Temple. 
  • At the age of 20, he received full ordination from Master Daben at Yongquan Temple in Fuzhou, China.
  • In 1935, he was invited to Penang, Malaysia, to serve as the supervisor at Kek Lok Si Temple, where he actively promoted Buddhism.
  • Later, he was invited by Master Baoling to reside at Guanyin Temple, where he served as the abbot and collaborated with other venerable masters to establish the Malaysian Buddhist Association and the Malaysia Buddhist Institute.
  • He held various positions, including Vice Chairman and General Affairs of the Malaysian Buddhist Association, Chairman of the Malaysia Buddhist Institute, Chairman of the Penang Buddhist Free School, and advisor to several Buddhist organizations and temples.

Venerable Zhen Guo was known for his dedication to promoting Buddhism and his significant contributions to the establishment and development of Buddhist institutions in Malaysia. He passed away on January 5, 1996, at 8:30 PM, at the age of 91, having been a monk for 77 years and holding precepts for 74 years.
